Remembering beloved shows that paid tribute to beautiful narratives that shaped our country and its long road to independence.

While the world has witnessed the undeniable talent of Filipinos in theater, the global audience is also an avid follower of notable Filipino narratives that exude world-class musicality and showmanship. And this month, as we celebrate our Independence Day, we walk down memory lane and look back at the wonderful stories that shared our proud history and rich culture through song, dance, and score.

3 Stars and a Sun (PETA)

The year is 2096. And in this dystopian future, two rival gangs face off at the Stormdome—where they soon realize that beyond their battle of supremacy lies problems more crucial than a misguided war. Featuring the songs of legendary Pinoy rap artist Francis M, the rap musical highlights the power of youth in nation-building and good governance. It is a moving story with memorable lessons that continue to resonate even today.

Ang Larawan (Culturing Musicat Productions)

Based on National Artist Nick Joaquin’s award-winning play, A Portrait of the Artist as Filipino, Ang Larawan The Musical was written and translated to a musical by a fellow National Artist, Rolando Tinio. Two spinster sisters grapple with the difficult decision to sell an heirloom painting as they try to survive a country on the brink of war. The critically acclaimed musical sheds light on the evolutions of our national identity, departures from outdated traditions, and the persistence of our cultural legacies.

Charot (PETA)

Charot is a political satire that doesn’t shy away from its highly apparent stance on the polarizing issues of our political landscape. It sheds light on pressing matters such as Charter Change, Federalism, and Philippine elections through intelligent writing and engaging production numbers. Staging political plays has long been a tradition of PETA, most especially in the advent of election season. And Charot, in all its intricate details and bounty of information, succeeds in its mission.

Lam-Ang (Tanghalang Pilipino)

Based on a well-known ethno-epic, Lam-Ang tells of the titular character’s heroic journey, delicately written to realistically portray both flaws and redeeming qualities. Aside from well-researched visuals that highlight its ethnic culture and setting, the musical succeeds in forming a cohesive narrative that pays tribute to an iconic Ilocano folk hero and the historical traditions that carried its story into the present.

Lean: A Filipino Musical (UP Repertory Company)

Capturing the zeitgeist of an iconic decade, Lean: A Filipino Musical transports its viewers back to the 80s at the height of the eponymous lead character’s influence in political activism. Through the musical makings of legendary composer Gary Granada, it sonically narrates the life of Leandro “Lean” Alejandro as he fights political oppression from one era to another. Aside from the lead’s heroics, the musical amplifies the cries of the suffering masses and reimagines the clarion call for change.

Mabining Mandirigma: A Steampunk Musical (Tanghalang Pilipino)

Aside from the well-received performance of Monique Wilson as iconic Filipino revolutionary Apolinario Mabini, Mabining Mandirigma garnered praise for its excellent story-telling and well-executed production. A steampunk reimagination of the sublime paralytic’s journey from the rise of Aguinaldo up to his return from exile, it offers a reflection on one’s nationalistic motives and patriotic leanings.

Miong (Repertory Philippines)

A musical homage to the first Philippine President, Miong deals with the rise of Emilio Aguinaldo: from his youth to the prominence of the revolution. And while his journey is muddled with controversy and hubris, the musical earnestly attempts to view his life’s story from his personal perspective. It is a story familiar to those who continue to revisit the struggle of two essential pieces to the success of the Philippine revolution.

Obra ni Juan (Philippine Stagers Foundation)

Artist of world-acclaimed masterpieces (Spoliarium, The Parisian Life, and The Death of Cleopatra), Obra ni Juan focuses on the tragic life of political activist and painter Juan Luna. From his bouts with mental disorder to his relationships with leading figures of the revolution, the musical paints a near-accurate depiction of his fragile mind’s workings. While his unquestionable genius is often celebrated, Obra ni Juan gives his darker truths the equal emphasis it deserves.

Rak of Aegis (PETA)

Phenomenal hit musical Rak of Aegis is a story of unity in resilience and of perseverance amidst circumstance, in the background of a well-written romance. Narrated by the music of Filipino rock band Aegis, the production provides an empathetic depiction of Filipinos in times of calamity. Alongside the struggle for a much-improved living condition, it also sheds light on digital fame as a solution to escape from poverty. It is poignant, relevant, and a perfect reminder of our current realities.
